What is Hypnobirthing? Science.

Lets start with what it's not... It's not 'woo' or for hippies!

It doesn't mean you have to have a home birth, or give birth in a forest.

It's not 'just breathing'.

It doesn't mean pain relief is banned.

It doesn't hypnotise you to act like a chicken! Far from it....

The Science Behind the Calm

When you think of birth, what comes to mind?

Are you feeling anxious, don't really know what to expect, heard lots of stories from friends? Well this is your birth story.

1. Understand your mind

What do you 'know' about birth? Our subconscious stores these, so when we think of birth, we recall these, our bodies tense and we start to lose our control. We go in to fight or flight.

Hypnobirthing helps you understand how your mind works and how you can control your thoughts, how to relax, and be in control

2. Understand your body

When fear, worry or anxiety creep in during birth, your body responds and your muscles tighten, including your uterus. But your uterus is a muscle designed to work with you, and your hormones are the magic that help labour begin and continue.

When you truly understand how your body works, you feel  relaxed, confident, and in control.

3. Know your rights & choices

You'll feel informed and prepared to make the right choices for you, your baby, and your positive birth - whatever path it takes.

This is your birth. Feel empowered, know your rights, make your choices - no regrets.

What will Hypnobirthing teach you?

You and your birth partner will learn how to relax deeply and confidently during birth, using techniques that support calm, connection and choices. These skills will last a lifetime.

You'll understand how your body works, your options, and how to make informed decisions that feel right for you, however your birth unfolds.

This isn't just about breathing! And it's not hippy. It's about building a toolkit for calm, confidence, empowerment and support.

The Benefits of Hypnobirthing

Hypnobirthing can help shorten labour, ease anxiety, and even lower the chances of postnatal depression.

It boosts your confidence, helps you manage pain, and creates a calmer experience for your baby too.

It also brings your birth partner into the journey in a really meaningful way, strengthening your bond and giving them a clear, supportive role.

Learning face to face, you'll get my support and personalised content. I get to know you and your story, and there is never a stupid question. I am always here for you, because I really do care.

Celebrities That Used Hypnobirthing

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge

"I found it very calming and peaceful. It takes a lot of the fear and misconception out of labour and childbirth, and focuses on the power of the mind, and the body’s ability to give birth without intervention.”

Giovanna Fletcher

"Hypnobirthing is all about finding the right headspace to help you relax and focus during labour. It’s not about making unrealistic promises, but rather giving women the tools they need to cope with the pain and uncertainty of childbirth. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is pregnant and wants to have a positive birth experience.”

Ella Mills (Deliciously Ella)

"I went totally into my own space during the birth, focusing on every sensation and visualising what was happening during it, thinking of each one as a wave.

It’s a whole other level of surrendering and trusting your body totally, and we spent months focusing on letting go of fear, learning everything we could about birth, so that we felt as educated and informed about every step of the process and every decision along the way."

Ferne McCann

"I think that the hypnobirthing definitely was amazing practice for my labour.

Some people have a pain free birth because of  Hypnobirthing, did I? No, I didn’t. I felt every ounce of pain.

I went into labour naturally and I had a natural birth, and all went well, she’s here and we’re healthy. You just need to be as relaxed as you possibly can.”

FAQs

Can I learn hypnobirthing on my own?

You can learn about hypnobirthing in books, online generic courses, listening to hypnosis tracks or podcasts. Courses with A Mother World are focussed on you, your pregnancy and your birth. Hypnobirthing is also more likely to make a real difference to you if you attend a personalised course, and have the support from your teacher.

Sure you can watch a video, whilst scrolling on your phone or folding the washing, but your full focus probably won't be on it…I speak from experience here! All education helps in birth though - knowledge is power!

You'll also have access to the client portal, where there's a huge amount of local information to support your birth and beyond. You also get my support whenever you need me, to share knowledge or signpost you to local services.

Does hypnobirthing make birth less painful?

This is realistic birth prep - of course birth is painful! But it's about reframing the pain, understanding what the pain is, tools to cope with the pain and understanding your options for pain relief.

You'll understand the fear - tension - pain syndrome. This helps get the oxygen to the working muscles in birth (uterus) and in turn may help pain. If you are tense, the blood goes to your vital organs, and your body is likely to go in to fight or flight mode. See - it's science!
